What do you do in your free time?

I spend most of my free time hanging out with friends. We walk and drink beer, often at the same time.
An average walk is usually 2 – 3 hours, but I’ve also done a 9-hour walk around the Yamanote Line. I can honestly say I’ve walked more of Tokyo than most Japanese people.

What has surprised you since you came to Japan?

I’m still continually surprised how clean and safe Japan is, how fast things get done, and how on-time the trains are. Japan is truly a special place to live.

Something interesting about your hometown or what do you miss about your hometown?

The thing I miss most about my hometown is the food! Food in Japan is amazing (especially the hamburgers), but it’s hard to find great Mexican food and great sandwiches.
If you’re ever in San Jose, California (specifically Los Gatos), go to Los Gatos Meats and get a “Super Hero” sandwich. They’re amazing!

Favorite place in Japan?

My favorite place is a yakitori restaurant called Kamata Toriyama, out in the Hachioji area. The food is great, but the location and atmosphere of the restaurant are what really make it special. Check it out.

Favorite memory in Japan?

It’s hard to choose one memory, but my favorite day of every year is the day of the Edogawa fireworks festival. My friends and I get to the Edogawa around 1pm. We get some sun, listen to music, throw a baseball around, and (of course) drink beer!
We watch the fireworks then continue the party after the fireworks. It’s always a great day spending time with friends.
