A Time Slip into Old Japan

Hello everyone!
This is the staff at Jabble Ochanomizu.
On my day off last week, I took a little trip to Shibamata in Katsushika, Tokyo.
It may not be the most famous tourist spot, but it’s the setting for the classic film series “Otoko wa Tsurai yo” (It’s Tough Being a Man),
and the area still retains a charming atmosphere of old Japan. It truly felt like I had time-traveled back to the Showa era.

Right outside Shibamata Station, there’s a statue of the beloved main character Tora-san waiting to greet visitors.
From the station to the famous Taishakuten Temple, the street is lined with old-style sweet shops and souvenir stores.
The smell of taiyaki and dango fills the air, and you can even try retro games like shateki (cork gun shooting) and smart ball.
It’s a nostalgic experience that’s fun for both kids and adults.

At Taishakuten, I explored the temple grounds and admired the beautiful Japanese garden and intricate wooden carvings.
Later, I enjoyed a peaceful break with matcha and traditional sweets. The quiet atmosphere helped me relax and forget the busyness of everyday life.

What makes Shibamata special is that it isn’t crowded, and it offers a more relaxed, authentic look at Japan’s past.
It’s a great destination for anyone interested in experiencing a slower, simpler side of Tokyo—one filled with warmth, tradition, and charm.
I think it’s also a wonderful recommendation for tourists visiting Japan.

Here at Jabble Ochanomizu, many students love talking about their weekend trips and cultural experiences.
It’s always fun to hear stories like, “I went to ___ last weekend!” Talking about travel memories in English is a great way to practice conversation naturally.

先週の休日に、東京都葛飾区にある柴又へ行ってきました。
観光地としてはそれほど有名ではないかもしれませんが、実は映画『男はつらいよ』の舞台となった町で、昔ながらの日本の雰囲気が色濃く残るエリアです。
まるでタイムスリップしたような気分になれる、そんな素敵な場所でした。

柴又駅を出るとすぐに「寅さん像」が出迎えてくれます。
駅前から帝釈天までの参道には、昔ながらの和菓子屋さんやお土産屋さんが並び、駄菓子や団子、たい焼きの甘い香りが漂っていました。
射的やスマートボールができるレトロなゲームコーナーもあり、子どもだけでなく大人も夢中になれるスポットです。

帝釈天の境内では、美しい日本庭園や立派な木彫りの彫刻を見ることができました。
その後、抹茶と和菓子のセットでひと休み。ゆっくりとした時間が流れ、日常の忙しさを忘れることができました。

観光客が比較的少なく、落ち着いた雰囲気の中で「昔の日本」を体験できるのが柴又の魅力です。
近代的な東京のイメージとは違い、昭和の温かさや素朴さを感じられる場所なので、外国人観光客にもおすすめです。

Jabbleお茶の水校には、東京の文化や歴史に興味のある生徒さんも多く、よく「この前〇〇に行ってきたよ〜」と受付で話してくれます。
英語で旅行の思い出を話すのは、会話の練習にもぴったりですね。
