My New Favourite Hawaiian Shirt

 

Nothing says summer quite like a great Hawaiian shirt.

 

Bright colours, fun patterns, and a relaxed feeling—they’re perfect for this time of year. Whether you’re heading out for a walk, meeting friends, or just enjoying a quiet day at home, a Hawaiian shirt somehow makes everything feel a little more like summer.

 

Recently, my fellow teacher Paul gave me an amazing Hawaiian shirt, and I absolutely love it.

At first glance, it looks like a colourful Hawaiian shirt, but when you look a little closer, you notice something special.

The design celebrates Chiba’s local sports teams.

 

As someone who has spent a lot of time living and working in Chiba, I thought it was a fantastic gift. It’s colourful, unique, and proudly shows off the city and prefecture that I call home here in Japan.

 

I’ve already worn it a few times, and I think it’ll become one of my favourite shirts this summer.

 

One of the best things about living in Chiba is that there’s always somewhere to go for a walk.

Sometimes I’ll stroll around Chiba City, stop for a coffee, or simply enjoy the atmosphere. On other days, especially when it’s really hot outside, I’m just as happy relaxing at home on the sofa while wearing my new shirt.

 

Either way, it reminds me of summer.

 

It also reminds me how thoughtful gifts don’t have to be expensive.

Sometimes the best presents are the ones that show someone knows what you like.

Paul knew I’d appreciate something connected to Chiba, and he couldn’t have picked a better shirt.

 

As an English teacher, this also reminds me of one of my favourite conversation topics.

Talking about things you like.

 

When students ask, “What should I talk about in English?” my answer is usually very simple.

 

Talk about your hobbies.

 

Talk about your favourite food.

 

Talk about your favourite sports team.

 

Or even talk about your favourite shirt!

 

These are the kinds of conversations people have every day.

If someone asked me what my favourite item of clothing is, I’d happily tell them about this Hawaiian shirt and explain why I like it so much.

Those kinds of personal stories make conversations interesting.

 

You don’t need complicated grammar or advanced vocabulary to have a good conversation.

In fact, simple English is often the best English.

For example:

 

“I got this shirt from my friend.”

 

“It has Chiba’s sports teams on it.”

 

“I love wearing it in summer.”

 

Those are short, natural sentences that anyone can learn.

As your confidence grows, you can add more details and keep the conversation going.

 

That’s exactly what we focus on at Jabble.

Rather than memorising long textbook dialogues, we encourage students to talk about their own lives and experiences. It’s much easier to remember English when you’re speaking about something that genuinely interests you.

 

Everyone has stories worth sharing.

 

Maybe you have a favourite baseball cap.

Maybe you have a lucky jacket that you’ve owned for years.

 

Those small stories often lead to the best conversations.

 

For me, this Hawaiian shirt will always remind me of this summer, of Chiba, and of Paul’s thoughtful gift.

I’m sure I’ll be wearing it many more times before summer comes to an end.
