This Golden Week, I decided to spend my time exploring more of Chiba. Even though I live and work in Chiba, there were still many places that I had been meaning to visit for years but had never quite gotten around to seeing. Since I had several days off, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to finally experience some of the famous sights and hidden gems that make Chiba such an interesting place.

Many people think of Chiba simply as the location of Narita Airport or Tokyo Disney Resort, but the prefecture has so much more to offer. From beautiful coastlines and historic shrines to unique natural landscapes, I discovered that there is always something new to explore.

One of the highlights of my trip was camping in Sanmu and Kujukuri. I have always enjoyed spending time outdoors, and the long beaches along Chiba’s eastern coast provide the perfect setting for a relaxing getaway. The sound of the waves, the fresh sea air, and the slower pace of life made it easy to forget about the busy routines of everyday life. Spending time around a campfire in the evening while listening to the ocean was especially memorable.

I also stayed a few nights near the beach in Futtsu. While I was there, I visited a fascinating tree that is said to be over 1,000 years old. Standing next to something that has been alive for so many centuries really puts time into perspective. It made me think about all the historical events that have happened during its lifetime. While in Futtsu, I also visited Tokyo Bay Kannon. The enormous statue is visible from a great distance and offers impressive views of the surrounding area. Climbing to the observation points inside was definitely worth the effort.

Another destination that left a strong impression on me was Byobagaura in Choshi. Often called the “Dover Cliffs of the East,” these dramatic coastal cliffs stretch for several kilometers along the Pacific Ocean. The combination of the towering cliffs, crashing waves, and open sky created some truly spectacular scenery. I spent quite a while simply walking along the coast and taking in the views. It is one of those places where photos never quite capture how impressive it feels in person.

One place that I had wanted to visit for a long time was Oyama Senmaida, the famous terraced rice fields. Seeing the fields arranged in layers across the hillside was beautiful, even outside of the main growing season. It reminded me of the deep connection between Japanese culture and agriculture. The landscape was peaceful and very different from the urban areas that many people associate with Chiba.

I also visited Okinoshima in Tateyama and explored the caves there. Walking through the cave tunnels and along the coastline felt like stepping into another world. The island is connected to the mainland by a sandbar, making it easy to access while still feeling adventurous. The area is rich in natural beauty, and I enjoyed spending time exploring the shoreline and learning a little about the area’s history.

Another memorable stop was Katori Shrine. The shrine grounds are beautiful and peaceful, surrounded by tall trees that create a calm atmosphere from the moment you enter. I always enjoy visiting historical and cultural sites in Japan because they offer a glimpse into traditions that have been maintained for centuries. Walking through the grounds and seeing the impressive architecture made for a relaxing end to one of my days of exploring.

One thing I learned during this trip is that you do not always need to travel far to have an adventure. Sometimes the most interesting places are surprisingly close to home. Chiba is a prefecture that many people pass through on their way to somewhere else, but it contains an incredible variety of attractions for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and anyone looking to escape the crowds.

As an English teacher, I often encourage students to find opportunities to use English in their daily lives. Traveling can be a great way to do this. Before visiting each destination, I spent some time reading information in English, looking at travel websites, and researching the history of the places I planned to visit. Learning about local attractions in English can be an enjoyable way to improve reading skills while also discovering new places to visit.

If you are looking for ideas for your next weekend trip, I highly recommend exploring more of Chiba. Whether you enjoy beaches, hiking, camping, historical sites, or beautiful scenery, there is something here for everyone. I was surprised by how many wonderful places I found, and I am already making a list of destinations for my next adventure.

Have you discovered any hidden gems in Chiba? Let us know during your next lesson at Jabble! We always enjoy hearing about new places to visit and sharing tr

avel stories with our students.
