Otokogi Tomatoes!
Hi everyone! This is Stacey from Jabble Musashi-Kosugi 😊
A few days ago, I took a trip to Okegawa to try something I had been curious about for years—Otokogi Tomatoes.
These tomatoes are famous in Saitama because they are grown under high-stress conditions with almost no water. The farmer who developed this method says it creates a much stronger and richer flavor.
I actually read about these tomatoes online before I even moved to Japan, so trying them had been on my bucket list for a long time!
The only problem? They’re not easy to find.
Since they’re only sold at a few select stores, I ended up driving about two and a half hours each way just to get them. By the time I arrived around 3 PM, there were only two bags left—each with two full-sized tomatoes. Perfect timing!
Of course, I bought both bags. I also picked up some cherry tomatoes and even a bottle of tomato consommé.
When I got home, I was really excited to finally try them.
As soon as I cut one open, I noticed something very different. The inside was a deep, rich red—much darker than a typical tomato. It also wasn’t watery at all. Usually, when you slice a tomato, the seeds and juice come out easily, but this one stayed firm and held its shape.
After adding just a little salt, I took a bite…
It was amazing!
The flavor was incredibly rich and concentrated. Honestly, it tasted more like a “real tomato” than any tomato I’ve ever had before.
Let’s Talk English! 🍅
This kind of experience is perfect for practicing English conversation.
For example:
- “It was worth the trip.”(行く価値がありました)
- “The flavor was very rich.”(とても濃厚な味でした)
- “I’ve never tasted anything like it.”(こんな味は初めてです)
At Jabble, we focus on helping you express your real experiences like this in English.
I still have a couple of tomatoes left, but honestly… I’m already thinking about going back to Saitama to buy more!
If you’ve ever tried Otokogi Tomatoes, let me know what you think 😊
