The other day, I found myself wandering around Shibuya during lunchtime, feeling hungry and craving something spicy.
I love Japanese food, but sometimes I just really want that strong, bold, American-style flavor.
When that mood hits, there’s one place I always think of first: Tex-Mex Factory.
It’s one of my favorite comfort-food restaurants in Tokyo, so I headed there without even checking the menu.
When I arrived, though, something was different.
The place was more crowded than usual, with people lining up near the entrance and a lot more energy in the room.
At first, I couldn’t figure out why—was it a holiday? A special event?
My curiosity didn’t last long, because the staff quickly explained that they were offering an all-you-can-eat tacos lunch special.
I had actually been planning to order something completely different that day, but once I heard “all-you-can-eat tacos,” I knew my plans were about to change.
I’ll be honest—I was a little disappointed for about three seconds. But as soon as I saw the taco counter, the disappointment instantly disappeared.
The system was simple: you could order one to three tacos at a time, or choose a taco bowl instead.
They had six different kinds of meat, and for each taco, you could pick two toppings. Everything looked good, but I immediately gravitated toward the spicy options.
If you ever go, take my advice—the spicy chicken and roast chicken are easily the best choices.
I tried almost everything (except the veggie meat), but I kept coming back to those two.
When it came to toppings, I didn’t even pretend to be creative.
I’m a simple guy with simple priorities: give me guacamole and cheese, and I’m happy.
Sure, there were other options, but guacamole is one of those things I can never say no to.
So I stuck with my favorites and built taco after taco exactly the way I like it.
Another thing I loved was the condiment station.
They had three different kinds of salsa—each with its own level of heat—and six types of hot sauce.
I’m the kind of person who gets excited just looking at a row of hot sauce bottles.
I sampled several and added a different one to almost every taco just to compare the flavors.
For anyone who enjoys experimenting with spice, this setup was amazing.
Besides the tacos, the buffet included salad, fresh tortilla chips, and French fries.
I had a few chips with salsa as a break between plates, but honestly, I was there for the tacos, so that’s where I focused most of my energy.
When you know you’re getting your money’s worth, you commit.
Speaking of value, the entire buffet cost only 1400 yen, which is surprisingly affordable for Tokyo—especially for a place in central Shibuya.
Good food, a fun atmosphere, and a great price… it’s not hard to understand why the restaurant was packed.
Even though the all-you-can-eat tacos weren’t what I originally planned to order, I left feeling completely satisfied.
Writing about it now actually makes me hungry again, and I’m already planning to go back soon—this time with a few friends who love spicy food as much as I do.
Experiences like this always remind me of something I try to share with my students at Jabble:
getting out, exploring the city, and trying international foods is a great way to connect with global culture.
Tokyo is full of opportunities to experience flavors from around the world, and these moments can help make English—or any foreign language—feel more real and personal.
Food is culture, after all, and culture is language.
So if you’re ever in Shibuya and craving something bold, flavorful, and a little messy (in the best way),
I highly recommend stopping by Tex-Mex Factory—especially if the all-you-can-eat taco special is happening again.
And if you ever need recommendations for spicy food around Tokyo, feel free to ask me in class!
