Parading Around

Hello everyone! It’s Angie from Jabble Funabashi Eikaiwa (船橋Jabble 英会話 スクール).

Can you believe it’s already April? It feels like it was just yesterday we celebrated Christmas and rang in the New Year.

It’s actually one of my favorite times of the year. In fact, I love the holidays so much, I celebrated it twice this year!

Did you know that Yokohama holds a Chinese New Year celebration every year? Yokohama has the largest Chinatown in Japan with about three to four thousand people.

Instead of, or in addition to , the Solar new year, a lot of people in China and other parts of Asia celebrate the Lunar New year.

It usually falls between late January or mid February; this year, it was on February 17th. This year, I decided to attend the parade!

I’ve celebrated Chinese New Year in the US before so I had some idea of what to expect.

That being said, it was my first time celebrating it in Japan’s largest Chinatown so I was really excited. It didn’t disappoint!

The whole city was decorated in beautiful displays. The illuminated floats were huge! There were also some very impressive lion and dragon dances.

It was so loud, I could almost feel the ground shake with each drum beat.

I think I have to make this an annual tradition. I hope to see you there next year!

もう4月だなんて信じられますか？クリスマスを祝い、新年を迎えたのはつい昨日のことのように感じます。

実は、私にとっては1年で一番好きな時期です。実際、私は休日が大好きで、今年は2回祝いました！

横浜では毎年春節のお祝いが行われているのをご存知ですか？横浜には約3000～4000人の人が集まる日本最大の中華街があります。

太陽暦の正月の代わりに、または太陽暦の正月に加えて、中国やその他のアジアの多くの人々が旧正月を祝います。

通常は1月下旬から2月中旬にあたり、今年は2月17日でした。今年はパレードに参加することにしました！

私は以前アメリカで春節を祝ったことがあるので、どんなことが期待できるかはわかっていました。

そうは言っても、日本最大の中華街で祝うのは初めてだったので、とても興奮しました。期待を裏切らない内容でした！

街全体が美しい装飾で飾られていました。ライトアップされた山車は巨大でした！獅子舞や龍舞もとても印象的でした。

とても大きな音で、太鼓の音ごとに地面が揺れるのを感じるくらいでした。

これを毎年の伝統にしなくてはならないと思います。来年も行けることを楽しみにしています！
