SUMMARY(あらすじ):
スタンリー・イェルナッツの呪われた人生は、彼のひいひいじいさんが汚い盗みを犯したところから始まりました。今はグリーン・レイク・キャンプという少年矯正施設へ、無実の罪で収容されています。その施設の少年たちは、毎日一日中、きっちり幅1.5m、深さ1.5mの穴を掘っていました。グリーン・レイクとは名ばかりで、そこには湖などありませんでしたが、無数の穴はありました。
スタンリーはすぐに、彼らが穴を掘っているのは、所長が何かを探しているからだと気づきます。しかし、この乾ききった湖の跡地にいったい何が眠っているというのでしょう？スタンリーは真実を探ります。犯罪と懲罰、そして贖罪を描いた作品です。
Stanley Yelnats is cursed. The curse began with his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather”. Now Stanley has to go to a boys’ detention center called Camp Green Lake for a crime he didn’t commit. There the boys spend all day, every day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. But there are a lot of holes.
Stanley quickly realizes the boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something. But what could be buried under a dry lake? Stanley tries to find the truth in this creative story that has crime and punishment—and redemption.

ディズニー制作で実写映画化もされています。主人公のスタンリーを演じたのは、若き日のシャイア・ラブーフ。
Holes was written by Louis Sachar in 1998. It was a huge success because of its complex plot, interesting characters, and representation of people of color and young people in prison.
There is a Disney film based on the book too. The main character Stanley is played by Shia LaBeouf.
