This year during Golden Week, I went to Okinawa for the first time! Unfortunately, it rained for most of the trip, but I still had an amazing time and discovered so many interesting places, foods, and experiences.
One place that really surprised me was American Village. Since I’ve already been to the United States, the idea of an “American Village” honestly didn’t sound very exciting at first. However, when I arrived, I completely changed my mind! The entire area was colorful, lively, and full of energy. I especially loved all the bright buildings and unique atmosphere. It felt very different from anywhere I’ve visited in Japan before.
One of my favorite parts was the Christmas-themed area. I thought the Christmas Village was so cute, and I immediately started thinking about how magical it would probably feel during the holiday season. I’d love to visit again around Christmas time to enjoy the decorations and festive atmosphere even more.
Another thing that impressed me during my Okinawa trip was the food. Before visiting, I had heard about Okinawan dishes like goya champuru, but honestly, I was very skeptical. In English, “goya” is called “bitter melon,” so I kept wondering, “How could a dish made with something called ‘bitter melon’ possibly taste good?”
Even though I wasn’t sure about it, I decided to try it anyway because I like being adventurous when it comes to local food. Whenever I travel, I always try to experience the local culture through food, even if something sounds unusual at first. Surprisingly, goya champuru turned out to be absolutely delicious! The flavors worked together much better than I expected, and now I’m even thinking about learning how to cook it at home someday.
Speaking of Okinawan food, I also became completely obsessed with sea grapes and Okinawan purple sweet potatoes during my trip. I ordered sea grapes with almost every meal because I loved their unique texture and salty flavor. I also ate far more purple sweet potato ice cream than I’d like to admit! Okinawa really has so many unique foods that you can’t easily find in other parts of Japan.
Traveling is always a great way to discover new places, cultures, and foods, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity to learn new vocabulary and practice English conversation. At Jabble Musashi-Kosugi, we love talking about travel experiences, local culture, and food from around the world during our English lessons. Sharing personal experiences like these is one of the best ways to make English feel natural, practical, and fun.
If you enjoy traveling, trying new foods, or learning about different cultures, why not join us for an English conversation lesson at Jabble Eikaiwa School?
