🏙️ Kowloon Walled City Park – A Glimpse into Hong Kong’s Past By Kenny / Jabble Ochanomizu 英会話スクール

One of the most fascinating parks I’ve ever visited is Kowloon Walled City Park in Hong Kong.
It’s a peaceful and beautiful park now, but it sits on the site of one of the most densely populated areas in history — the old Kowloon Walled City.

At its peak, more than 1.2 million people lived per square kilometer in this small, tightly packed space.
The city became famous for its maze-like alleys, neon lights, and unique mix of architecture.
It’s no surprise that it inspired countless films, books, and video games over the years.
There was even a massive five-story amusement arcade in Kawasaki, Japan, that recreated the atmosphere of the Walled City!

The original city was demolished in 1994, and Kowloon Walled City Park opened a year later.
The park includes sections of the original walls and foundations, as well as a small museum and a fascinating photo exhibition showing what life inside the Walled City was like.
Walking through it now feels calm and reflective — hard to imagine the chaos and energy that once filled the same ground.

Even though I never had the chance to see the Kowloon Walled City before it was demolished, I’m glad I could visit the park.
Standing there, surrounded by history, I could imagine what it must have been like — a small city bursting with life, creativity, and human resilience.

香港で訪れた中で、最も印象的だった公園のひとつが「九龍寨城公園（Kowloon Walled City Park）」です。
現在は静かで美しい公園ですが、かつてこの場所は世界でもっとも人口密度が高かった地域のひとつ「九龍寨城」の跡地にあります。

最盛期には、わずかな土地に1平方キロメートルあたり120万人以上が暮らしていたと言われています。
細い路地、無数のネオン、独特な建築が入り混じるその街は、映画やゲーム、小説など世界中の作品に影響を与えました。
実は、日本の川崎にも、その雰囲気を再現した巨大なアミューズメント施設があったほどです。

1994年に取り壊され、翌年に現在の九龍寨城公園が開園しました。
園内には、当時の城壁や建物の一部が保存されており、写真展示やミニ博物館では当時の生活の様子を見ることができます。
今ではとても穏やかな場所ですが、かつての喧騒とエネルギーを想像すると、とても感慨深い気持ちになります。
