【Tokyo Art Experience】 Engage All Five Senses in Hokusai's World

Hello everyone!
I’m Haruka, staff at Jabble Chiba Eikaiwa School (英会話スクール 千葉校).

Last week, I visited a special interactive art exhibition in Tokyo called “HOKUSAI ANOTHER STORY”! 😄
I happened to go on the final day of the event, and the venue was packed with visitors.

At the exhibition, I was able to learn about the life and artwork of Katsushika Hokusai, one of Japan’s most famous ukiyo-e artists.
I was surprised to learn that he lived to be 90 years old—which was extremely long-lived for someone in the Edo period!

The exhibition had immersive rooms inspired by different elements—like the “Room of Wind” and the “Room of Earth”—
that let you physically step into the world of Hokusai’s “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (富嶽三十六景)”.
In the “Room of Earth,” the floor would transform into ice or a lake as soon as you stepped in.
In the “Room of Wind,” you could actually feel the breeze while admiring the landscapes Hokusai painted.

The most memorable part for me was the “Hokusai Room.”
With a giant screen, wind effects, sound, and floor vibrations, you could experience his artwork with all five senses.
The real-time recreation of “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” (神奈川沖浪裏)—which is known worldwide as the “Great Wave”—was especially powerful.
It felt like I was experiencing the very scenery Hokusai once saw.

I don’t usually go to art museums, but this interactive experience made me genuinely interested in seeing more.
I’m now curious to check out “Klimt Alive,” another immersive exhibition currently showing in Tokyo.

先週のお休みに、東京で開催されていた体験型アート展「HOKUSAI ANOTHER STORY（北斎アナザーストーリー）」に行ってきました！😄
ちょうど最終日に訪れたので、とても多くの来場者で賑わっていました。

この展示では、葛飾北斎の生涯や代表的な作品について、詳しく学ぶことができました。
北斎はなんと90歳まで生きたそうで、江戸時代としては驚くほどの長寿だったそうです！

特に印象的だったのは、五感で作品世界を体験できるインタラクティブアートの展示コーナーです。
「風の部屋🪽」「大地の部屋🏞️」など、それぞれのテーマに合わせた空間が用意されていて、まるで《富嶽三十六景》の中に自分が入り込んだような感覚になりました。

例えば「大地の部屋」では、足元に描かれた地面が氷や湖に変化し、「風の部屋」では実際に風を感じながら、北斎が描いた風景を眺めることができます。
子どもから大人まで楽しめる、東京のおすすめアートスポットだと感じました。

一番心に残ったのは、「北斎の部屋」と呼ばれる展示。
巨大スクリーンに映し出された映像に、風や音、床の振動が組み合わさり、まるで作品の中に入り込んだような没入体験ができました。
中でも有名な《神奈川沖浪裏》🌊（海外では「The Great Wave」としても知られています）の再現は圧巻で、まさに北斎が見た景色を追体験しているかのようでした。

私は普段あまり美術館に行くことはないのですが、今回の体験をきっかけにアートへの興味が一気に深まりました。
今話題の「クリムト・アライブ」など、今後も機会があれば行ってみたいと思っています。

こうした日常の体験や旅の思い出は、英会話のレッスンでも生徒さんと楽しく共有しています。
