A Trip to the Sumida Hokusai Museum

It’s Marshall from Jabble Musashi-Kosugi (武蔵小杉 Jabble 英会話スクール).

Last year, I took a trip to the Sumida Hokusai Museum in Tokyo with a couple of friends from university—one American and one Japanese.
They both studied art, and it was their first time seeing each other in nearly 15 years, so we wanted to go somewhere memorable.
I had seen The Great Wave off Kanagawa before, but I didn’t know much about Hokusai’s other work or his life.

The museum is located in Sumida City, not far from where Hokusai was born.
The building is sleek and modern, and it really stands out from the older, more traditional architecture in the area. Inside,
it’s filled with woodblock prints, drawings, letters, and even early manga created by Hokusai.
I was surprised to learn that he created drawing manuals for aspiring artists—and they had some reproductions on display that we could flip through.

What stood out most was Hokusai’s persistence.
Even though he gained recognition in his lifetime, he still struggled with creativity, finances, and evolving his style.
As someone who enjoys history, I appreciated how the museum explained each work in detail. It gave me a deeper understanding of both the art and the artist’s life.

After the museum, we grabbed some tonkatsu nearby before saying goodbye at Tokyo Station.
It was a short but memorable day—good art, good food, and good conversation.

In our English classes at Jabble Musashi-Kosugi, art sometimes comes up when we’re talking about travel, culture, or personal interests.
It’s always fun to hear students share what kinds of art they enjoy and how they describe it in English.

みなさん、こんにちは！

昨年、大学時代の友人2人と一緒に東京のすみだ北斎美術館へ行ってきました。
一人はアメリカ人、もう一人は日本人で、どちらも美術を学んでいたので、約15年ぶりの再会にふさわしい特別な場所を選びました。
「神奈川沖浪裏（The Great Wave off Kanagawa）」は見たことがありましたが、北斎の人生や他の作品についてはあまり知りませんでした。

美術館は墨田区にあり、北斎の生誕地の近くです。近代的な外観で、周囲の昔ながらの建物の中でもとても目立っていました。
館内には、版画、スケッチ、手紙、そして北斎が描いた漫画などが展示されていて、とても見ごたえがありました。

特に驚いたのは、北斎が**絵を学ぶ人のために描いた「絵手本」**のような漫画を制作していたことです。美術館ではその復刻版を実際に手に取って見ることもできました。
また、北斎は生前から有名だったにもかかわらず、ずっと創作に苦労し続けていたことも印象的でした。
アイデアに詰まったり、生活費のために作品を売らなければならなかったり、芸術家としての苦悩が伝わってきました。

私はアートそのものよりも歴史的な背景に興味があるので、作品の横に書かれた詳しい説明はとてもありがたかったです。北斎の人生と作品を深く知ることができました。

美術館のあと、友人たちと一緒に近くでとんかつを食べてから、東京駅でお別れしました。
短い時間でしたが、アート・グルメ・会話すべてが充実した良い1日になりました。
