SUMMARY(あらすじ):
アンダルシアの羊飼いの少年サンチャゴは、ピラミッドの側に眠っているという秘宝を求め、スペインからエジプトの砂漠まで旅に出ます。夢に秘宝が現れたからです。旅の道中、ジプシーの女性や、自分で自分を王と呼ぶ者、そして錬金術師と出会います。彼らのアドバイスによって、様々な事を少年は学んでいきます。砂漠の秘宝よりも、自分の心と向き合うことの大切さに焦点を置いた作品です。
An Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert to find a treasure buried near the Pyramids. He saw this treasure in a dream. On his trip he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist. They give him advice and he learns a lot about himself. The story is more about the importance of listening to our hearts than buried treasure.

(私はもうすっかり今の現状になれてしまったんだよ…この店はまさに私が望んでいた通りのサイズだ。今さら何かを変えようとは思わない、変化とどう向き合ったらいいかわからないからね。今の自分に慣れてしまったんだよ。君によって私は今、豊かになること、そして今まで知らなかった世界を知ることと向き合わされている。そして向き合ってしまったから、自分の可能性がどれだけ広がっているか知ってしまったから、私は君が来る前よりも惨めな気分になるだろう。本当は色んな事を成し遂げられるはずなのに、自分がそれを望まないだけだと気づいてしまったからだ。)

Fun Facts About The Book(トリビア)!
パウロ・コエーリョは1987年に、この作品を僅か２週間で完成させました。
この本では運命に関して様々なことが語られており、ニューヨークタイムズはこの本を「小説というよりは自己啓発本に近い」と評しました。ブラジルの小さな出版社から発売されたにも関わらず、今では世界中で有名になった本作品。発売以来、楽曲や舞台、歌など様々なもののモチーフとなっています。
Paulo Coelho wrote The Alchemist in just two weeks in 1987.
The book talks a lot about destiny and the New York Times said the book is “more self-help than literature”. It’s very popular around the world, even though it was first published by a small Brazilian company. Since it was published people have made many adaptations including a symphony, a play, and a song.
